Release Notes for Desktop

By each release the article is updated, and you can see what changes have been rolled out within the last month as part of a Software-as-a-Service maintenance strategy. Some improvements will have immediate impact for all our customers and some will require activation.

Release: 1.17.07

Release date: 9 August 2017

New Features

  • Splash screen on startup is now supported on the Desktop Web App
  • It is now possible to adjust the sharpness in order to achieve a better reading experience in archived papers. (not supported in Safari. Contact support@visiolink.com to enable.)
  • For Desktop Web Apps with voucher field: Added support for voucher being filled automatically through link (by adding ?voucher=xxxx in the url)

 Improvements

  • Improved memory management to stabilize performance
  • When sharing by mail, the URL of the article is shared; previously the URL of the publication was shared.
  • We now support empty URLs in enrichments, which are used to create a hotspot with tooltip that doesn’t contain an URL
  • The teaser text, when sharing articles, is now shorter and without picture
  • Articles now open links in a separate tab

 Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where author wasn’t showing in shared articles
  • Fixed a German translation issue
  • Fixed an issue with search when using the ‘+’ character
  • Fixed a rare issue with scaling, when the pages are of different size in the same publication

New Features

  • Added global search in Desktop Web App to allow search across regional papers and morning/evening editions.
  • New feature: Autoflip. When active the app will autoflip pages of the current publication. You enable by adding the URL parameter: ?autoflip=true (5 seconds before flip). You can also adjust time before flip manually like this: ?autoflip=true&autoflipseconds=X  where X is number of seconds before flip.

Improvements

  • Added cache busting to the Desktop Web App
  • Added support for dynamic splash screen when loading the page
  • Added tooltip label on the links-button
  • Enabled scrolling of the menu (when there are more buttons than the window can show)
  • In Search, you can now only pick dates with a publication
  • Optimized search performance to ease client and server load
  • Zooming is no longer possible during cutout activity

Bug Fixes

  • Removed cut out function during interstitials
  • Pagenumber will now be showed in ascending order in archive

  • Added an error page if Desktop Web Fallback is enabled, but flash is disabled in the browser

  • Now keeps uneven numbers in the page input field (previously changed it to the even page number of the double page)

  • Added a setting that decides whether the page arrows in the bottom should always be displayed or not

  • New error page for when flash isn’t supported or Desktop Web Fallback is disabled (contact support to get the new fallback page)


Improvements

  • Issues can now be opened inside the Desktop Web App, with the possibility to return using a back button
  • Improved text on search and archive for better visibility
  • It is now possible to change sorting of archive publications in settings (ascending or descending)
  • Archive and Search sub-pages can be opened using /archive and /search in the URL path (This will only work if a region has been saved, or there is only one region in the solution. Also, search and archive has to be enabled respectively)
  • Added a “Select” button to date picker
  • Improved sharpness on 4K monitors
  • Renamed “print” to “print/save” to clarify where the save function is

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Interstitials not tracking properly 
  • Fixed issue with frequency interstitials, where swipes on single pages didn’t count
  • Fixed performance issue with single pages on the Desktop Web Fallback in Chrome

  • Fixed an issue where switching sections fast didn’t navigate as intended

  • Fixed an issue that could render the user unable to turn pages, after quickly turning the pages back and forth several times
  • Fixed an issue with zooming in Firefox, that zoomed slightly to the left of the expected zoom area
  • Fixed an issue where pictures in a slideshow makes the rest of the text jump up and down 
  • Fixed an issue with picture-text sometimes disappearing if the picture is in a slideshow

  • The logo in top left corner is can now become clickable and redirect user to a specified website. Contact Customer Care to enable this feature.

  • Improved scroll wheel sensitivity, for better zoom function using trackpad

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue with displaying HTML tags in the preview when sharing an Article to Facebook
  • Fixed an issue with prematurely collapsing the date selection box in calendar when making a selection

Improvements & Changes

  • Major improvements to zoom quality and zoom speed. We have introduced a new method for displaying publication text, which will reduce load time when zooming drastically. If you would like to read more about this, take a look at this blogpost
  • We have added a helpful text in the Archive Search interface, hinting how the reader can optimize the accuracy of search results
  • During the past months, the way we handle configurations has undergone a restructuring. This release will reconfigure all HTML Desktop solutions, which might cause a few minor inconsistencies in the interface. If you experience any issues, please contact Visiolink Customer Care    

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed that search event was sent twice to Google Analytics
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the search results list to be empty if all results where found in the same year. Now the list expands automatically when containing results from one year only
  • Sometimes pictures in the article view list where not shown. This is now fixed

Release: Web 1.16.09

Improvements & Changes

  • New Feature: Newsticker. Headlines of the latest news available through a menu bar button. News are feeded through RSS
  • Shared articles now have the same layout as in the article view. This layout ensures that your articles always display beautifully no matter where they are opened - e.g. from Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.
  • Teasers for articles shared on social media now display article pictures instead of the front page of the publication. If the article contains no pictures, it will fall back to the front page of the publication from where the shared article origins. 
  • Thumbs of article pictures are now shown in the article list. This provides the reader with both headline, first part of the article text and image when browsing through the list of articles in the article view  
  • Year selecter now added to the calendar for easier date selection

Bug Fixes

  • Headers in the article list where out of alignment in Firefox
  • Better recognition of article positions on the page

Improvements & Changes

  • We have added a setting making it possible to display Sunday as the first day of the week in the calendar 
  • Login Portal: We now display the front page of each section beside the newest edition of the publication. See it here
  • Login Portal: We have added the Archive Search functionality to allow readers to search for content in the archive of publications before being prompted to log in  
  • The section and page overview menu has been improved and it now first opens all section front pages making it possible to jump between sections. Another click will expand the side bar and display an overview of all pages 
  • When printing an article, pictures are now included. Please note that different browsers handle pictures differently, which can result in stretched or cut pictures when printing.

Bug Fixes

  • Pressing the escape button when zoomed in would display navigation arrows and cover up some of the page

Improvements & Changes

  • Accessibility optimization: We have made a thorough work through of the interface of the reader and optimized it for visually impaired readers using screenreader technology
  • Several improvements of the search functionality, date picker and in the search result highlight view
  • Thumbnail images in the page overview view and in the print menu now load way more gracefully

Bug Fixes

  • The right side menu now behaves well on Safari for Mac
  • The Close button in the Archive Search view could cover other buttons if the window was scaled down
  • Navigation arrows no longer jump from side to bottom when turning from a single page (e.g. frontpage) to a double page (spread).

Improvements & Changes

  • Shortcut keys for selected menu functionalities added. The reader can now press Ctrl+O to open page overview, Ctrl+U to open the reader in fullscreen mode, Ctrl+F to search in the publication or in the archive, Ctrl+H to open the navigation help and as previously announced Ctrl+P to open the print menu. Mac users must use the Cmd-button + letter. Shortcut commands are visible in the tool tips when hovering the menu icons with the cursor. 
  • Optimized caching so that changes and new features are available to all readers instantly after release without caching dependencies.

Improvements & Changes

  • A Help Screen is activated and accessible from the question mark icon in the menu. Opening this will reveal all mouse and keyboard shortcuts for navigating the publication
  • Key Color now applies for selected pages when printing and selected date in the calendar
  • The calendar now allows the reader to jump to a month and a year for optimizing the quest for archive issues
  • Greater contrasts on certain texts for improved accessibility. Texts in the HTML Desktop reader are now fully WCAG 2.0 level AAA compliant (highest level of compliance) 
  • Hitting Ctrl+P (PC) / Cmd+P (Mac) on the keyboard will open the print menu if present. When print menu is open, the same command will print the selected pages.

Bug Fixes

  • The Flash fallback could show low quality pages, which became evident when zooming. This is now fixed.
  • For German customers: Searching for the root form of a word now returns results for pages containing other forms of the word as well. Please note, that the highlight overlay will only highligh the word if it is present in the same form on the page.

Release: Web 1.16.02
Released on: 07.03.2016

Improvements & Changes

  • New navigation arrows in the article view.  Now readers can swipe through articles by clicking arrows back and forth.
  • New thumb nail image for improved overview. In the article view a thumb nail image of the spread containing the active article is visible in the top left corner. In the thumb, the active article is marked in a colored overlay (key color). Clicking the thumb will close the article view and go to the spread. 
  • No article view icon when there is no XML available. Now the article view icon disappears on issues that of some reason do not have any article data. Until now, a user could be met by an empty article view.   
  • To unify measurement metrics across platforms, the Download event in Google Analytics is now triggered on HTML Desktop, the Flash fallback and the Device fallback every time an issue is opened. This is now the same across all platforms (iOS, Android, Windows, Web)
  • Added an option to turn off the automatic slideshow of article pictures in the article view if one article has more pictures. Enabling this option will display the first picture only, but it is still possible to click on the picture and open a pop over slideshow containing all pictures.    

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that would cause day names not to match with dates in the Archive Search menu
  • Fixed a bug that could cause the drop cap (the big starting letter in the body text) to fall down when combined with fact boxes in the article view

Release: Web 1.16.01
Released on: 01.02.2016

Improvements & Changes

  • Subarticles that relate to a main article - such as an info box - are now part of the main article and do not have separate entries anymore.
  • When sharing via e-mail, the popup will now display a message when e-mail is successfully sent. This prevents sending multiple mails.
  • It is now possible to insert a custom fav icon. Fav icons are the small icons displaying in the browser tab in the top of the screen. Must be delivered in a 32x32 px resolution.
  • Zoom has been improved and works smoother. The reader can now zoom in five zoom levels and use new navigation possibilities. Please see our FAQ for details.
  • Support for opening links in the same window. Per default links will open in a new window, but now you can set them to open in the same window.
  • The Cover Calendar (calender displaying front pages instead of dates) now has an option to show the newest publication at the top. Default is oldest at the top (which means that the reader will see the first publication of the selected month at the top)
  • Demo Pages: It is now possible to show a number of pages as a demo for potential subscribers. Once set up, you can use the ordinary link to any issue and add '/demo' to it. By distributing this link, anyone opening it will be able to read a number of pages (this number is configurable - we recommend three) before they are met with a pop up that prompts to go to your login/subscriber site. You can use Visiolink's default pop up or create your own.

Improvements & Changes

  • Added the possibility to chose between a light and a dark theme
  • Made it possible to add up to three links in the menu (e.g. to your website)
  • Made it possible to switch between a "Home"-icon and a "Link"-icon when adding links to the menu
  • Introduced zoom levels 1 through 5 controlled by scroll wheel or page up/page down
  • The acceptable double click speed increased from 200ms to 400ms making it easier to zoom
  • The click area width for "next page" and "previous page" navigation arrows has been increased
  • Now possible to choose between continuous page numbering and numbers restarting at each section change in the page overview and the 'print pages' view 

Bug Fixes

  • The date picker in the archive search view is now translated (it was in English no matter what language was selected)
  • Added fallback image when pages fail to load
  • Fixed some issues causing interstitials to show up in publications in which they were not booked 
  • Changed the color of the navigation arrows when they are clicked to a more subtle color
  • Search results are now ordered correctly
  • Fixed some date formatting issues in the search view
