Google Tag Manager for Visiolink solutions

Google Tag Manager is an excellent tool for tracking websites and apps. It allows us to integrate triggers and tags and removes the need for custom lines of code. It works through a data layer, where data is stored before it is shipped to Google Analytics. One of the biggest advantages is the flexibility of the management system. With a large data layer, the changes and campaigns can be directly controlled from the tag management system thus removing the involvement of developers. This can increase the focus on business objectives and make future changes easier to implement across solutions.

What changes for a Visiolink customer?

The implementation of Google Tag Manager at Visiolink does not change the way customers work with their data. The implementation will create a more reliable data foundation and changes in the Google Analytics setup but it won't allow individual customers to create new tags or change the existing ones. However, we are open to suggestions concerning existing tags or the creation of new ones.

Specifically, customers need to change the following in Google Analytics to benefit from the Google Tag Manager implementation:

  • Create 5 custom dimensions

These changes are necessary to continue to track a set of highly relevant parameters. If the custom dimensions aren't created, you will not be able to find data on:

  • Platforms (iOS, Android, Web)
  • App versions
  • Orientation
  • Sections

Even though the changes only affect customers with solutions updated later than December 2014, we highly recommend everyone to make these changes to the Google Analytics setup. By doing so, you can ensure the future data foundation for your publication. This way you won't have to deal with an eventual loss of data when the solutions are updated.
