How-to: Upload Based Processing (Early Release)

2023-11-15 10:29:25 UTC

With Upload Based Processing Visiolink has introduced a new processing system eliminating the need for manual intervention in the processing flow and adding a number of configuration options to help individual publishers achieve a high level of quality without errors and omissions in their digital publications.

What is Upload Based Processing

To publish a publication digitally, processing of PDF and XML files must be activated in Visiolinks processing system. With Upload Based Processing the publication will be processed and reprocessed automatically when the system detects new files on Visiolink's ftp. Updating a publication with new content no longer requires manual reprocessing of the publication from Visiolink's backend system. Simply deliver new files to Visiolink's ftp, and reprocessing will start automatically. Upload Based Processing also supports Early Release publishing, i.e. processing and publishing the paper prior to the date of the publication.

Rather than only being able to collect files on the day of publication or the evening before the publication date, Upload Based Processing has been designed in such a way that it is possible to configure a number of days in the past and the future respectively, where the files for a publication should be collected. The number of days in the future is particularly useful for magazines, which are ready well before they are released. The number of days in the past will determine the time interval for automatic reprocessing. If files are delivered outside the determined interval, processing must be activated manually from Visiolinks backend system.

Configuration options

  • Page-tolerance: number of missing PDF files per section allowed in the digital publication. Visiolink recommends a page-tolerance of 0 missing files to avoid blank pages in the publication
  • Time interval(s) for pickup of files and automatic reprocessing.
  • Number of days in the past and future for when the system should look for delivery of new files for each day of the week.
  • Missing section front page will postpone processing
  • Section reordering (optional)
  • Number of pages divisible by 2 or 4 (optional)

If processing fails

In some cases processing fails, usually caused by material not delivered to Visiolink, missing pages or errors in file names. If you need assistance, Visiolink's support team is ready to help 24/7.  In addition to 24/7 support, Visiolink offers surveillance of individual papers. With Publication Availability Watch Visiolink’s team will monitor processing of your papers 24/7 and contact you by phone if the publication is unavailable at the expected release target. Publication Availability Watch is part of 24/7 PremiumContact Customer Care for further details.
