The Article Event (Engagement)

This article will show you how to create a custom report to retrieve our article view event.

With this report, you can retrieve article views across all newer versions on all platforms.

The article event is triggered when a reader clicks, pans, zooms or otherwise navigates to an article that is XML-supported. The article (engagement) event is described much more in-depth right here. If the article is not named in the XML, the article in question will be sent with an “NA” event label.


1. Make sure you are logged in to your Google Analytics account.

2. Choose your ePaper, and navigate to your desired view

3. Go to 'Custom Reports' located under the customization tab in the top left side of GA


4. Click 'New Custom Report'



5. Fill in the forms exactly like the image below and click 'save'


*Remember to set the filter to ‘Regex’ to make sure Google can find all the event data.

6. Now you should be able to see the data from the Article Event.


The content being shown is different depending on your choice in "Dimension Drilldowns".
The different options are:

The Event Label shows page number, article title, article author and article category. 

The Event Category shows the name of the customer, the paper/magazine ID, the publication ID and the type of event.

The Event Action shows from where the article has been accessed and how it has been triggered. In this case the source of traffic, the method of access, what page the action happened on, the character count (without space) and lastly the external article ID.

The Event Value is used to capture time duration spent on reading. This count is triggered together with the engagement event and ends with it.

To see even more articles, click the ‘Show rows’ drop-down menu in the bottom right and select your desired number of rows. If you select 100 rows, you will be able to see data for the 100 most popular articles in your publication for the selected date range.


7. For specific date range, go to the top right corner and choose the desired date range. 



When the custom report is made, it is saved to your customization tab and you can use the same one to get data for a new date range, you don't need to make a new report the next time you want data.
