Introduction
Evidence shows that the article overview (German: “Moderne Ansicht”) is more appealing to new and younger user groups. We have therefore created support for Google Ads interstitials in the article overview. This ensures that interstitial page views - and consequently ad revenue - are maintained despite the shift from the e-paper experience to the article overview experience (German: “Moderne Ansicht”).
Article overview interstitials let you present an overlay - an ad or other promotional content - to users as they swipe through your app. Each interstitial appears at an article overview page that you define, slides in with the user's swipe, and is dismissed with another swipe.
How it works
As a user swipes through your app, the content for the next interstitial is preloaded in the background. By the time the user reaches an article overview page that has an interstitial, the content is already prepared and appears instantly - and never as a blank or half-loaded screen.
When the user arrives at the article overview, the interstitial slides in as an overlay (only the top bar is visible). A single swipe dismisses it and reveals the article overview page underneath, which has already loaded, so there is no waiting.
If the content is not ready in time - for example if an ad did not load - the interstitial is simply skipped and the user continues uninterrupted. Users never see an empty interstitial.
| The interstitials only appear when the user swipes. If the user exclusively navigates by clicking the category tabs the interstitials will not show. |
| When categories are skipped via the category navigation and interstitials as a result are also skipped the first skipped interstitial and only this one will be displayed on the next swipe. If there is already a regular interstitial scheduled at that position this interstitial will not be shown. Other skipped interstitials will not be shown - only the first. |
Where they appear
The interstitial appears as an overlay over the article overview page the user has swiped to. And a single swipe dismisses it and reveals the article overview page underneath.
User journey - example:
An interstitial ad unit is placed between article overview page 1 and article overview page 2
The user is on article overview page 1:
The user swipes to article overview page 2
An interstitial appears (in fact an overlay over article overview page 2):
The user swipes again.
The interstitial disappears and article overview page 2 appears:
Setting it up
Since Article overview interstitials is based on Google Ad Manager, we need the following from you to set up it up:
1. Account ID
2. Native Ad Template ID
3. Ad Unit Codes
4. Ad Manager App ID
You can use the same ad unit codes for article overview interstitials that you use for your e-paper interstitials or you can use separate ad unit codes. We just need to know which positions they should be mapped to.
Example: Shared ad unit codes
| Ad unit code | Placement in e-paper spread view | Placement in article overview |
| interstitial_1 | After page 3 | Over article overview page 5 |
| interstitial_2 | After page 7 | Over article overview page 9 |
| interstitial_3 | After page 11 | Over article overview page 13 |
| interstitial_4 | After page 15 | Over article overview page 17 |
| interstitial_5 | After page 19 | Over article overview page 21 |
Example: Separate ad unit codes
| Ad unit code | Placement in e-paper spread view | Ad unit code | Placement in article overview |
| epaper_int_3 | After page 3 | article_int_5 | Over article overview page 5 |
| epaper_int_7 | After page 7 | article_int_9 | Over article overview page 9 |
| epaper_int_11 | After page 11 | article_int_13 | Over article overview page 13 |
| epaper_int_15 | After page 15 | article_int_17 | Over article overview page 17 |
| epaper_int_19 | After page 19 | article_int_21 | Over article overview page 21 |
Good to know
• No empty covers - an interstitial appears only when its content is ready.
• Users stay in control - one swipe dismisses it.
• You set the frequency - by choosing how many pages carry an interstitial.
