With Smart Onboarding we have designed a flow to onboard new, unsubscribed users - guiding them faster to relevant content and demonstrating value from the very first session.
The main idea is to guide new users seamlessly into a personalized experience that culminates in a free trial subscription. The ultimate goal is to better convert first-time users into engaged subscribers.
Smart Onboarding has a strong focus on clarity, personalization, and conversion:

• It has richer personalization options to tailor the experience from the start
• It offers a compelling free trial offer that automatically converts into a paid in-app subscription
This Smart Onboarding experience makes the product’s value immediately tangible and creates a clear, low-friction path from first app open to subscription.
Smart Onboarding flow explained
The Smart Onboarding flow has been successfully designed and implemented with a clear, guided user journey:
The flow begins with the consent screen (CMP), ensuring that user tracking is properly enabled from the start and allowing us to understand user behavior within the app.
On the next screen users can either log in as an existing subscriber or continue as a new user. Users who choose to log in are guided through the usual flow (push setup, region selection, start page, and login), while new users are seamlessly directed into the Smart Onboarding experience.
In the Smart Onboarding flow new users are guided through a set of personalization steps, including selecting their region, enabling push notifications, and choosing their preferred font size. This step creates an early sense of ownership and relevance, helping users feel invested in the app experience from the beginning.
Next, users are informed about the availability of a free trial, including clear communication that they will receive a reminder before the paid subscription begins. This screen is shown only to users who have enabled push notifications, ensuring that the reminder can be delivered.
Finally, users are presented with a free trial offer via in-app subscription. They can access content for a limited period at no cost, after which the subscription automatically transitions into a paid plan through Apple or Google. A toggle allows users to take full control, including the option to start a paid subscription immediately if they choose.
Overall, the Smart Onboarding flow creates a more engaging, personalized, and conversion-focused onboarding experience, making the value of the app clear from the very first interaction.

What we need from you
To set up Smart Onboarding we need the following from you:
• Texts for each screen
• Image for each screen (if needed)
• The order in which the different personalization screens shall be displayed (E.g. push personalization first or font size personalization first?)
• (Optional) (Cleverpush dependency) A CleverPush integration is a prerequisite for the reminder feature. Since the reminder that the subscription is soon to go from free to paid is triggered by a CleverPush custom event, it is required that you set up this custom event in your CleverPush backend.
